CHAPTER1: LOVE DELETE. »I’ve got hundreds
of files on my computer I don’t need anymore. Why
is it so hard to get rid of them? Has the trashcan fallen
asleep?«
|
»Would you delete this if I paid you for it? Say,
1£ a megabyte?« After a day of trying to convince
people to get rid of some data, I had to call it quits.
Nobody would do it, whereas getting rid of physical things
proved to be fun and healthy (interviews, left vs video
smash, right).
|
»Are you sure you want to remove the items in the
trash permanently? You cannot undo this action. Cancel.
OK.« The fear of losing [whatever] regardless of
its actual value is engineered deeply into our Operating
Systems.
|
Rebranding the OS Trashcan, thus changing user behaviour:
Please welcome... the Trashbabies! »They live in
my trashcan. They know no greater spectacle than to see
data being deleted. They love deleting. They think I don’t
do enough of it, and they’re quite right –
I’ve got too many files.«
